Since the publication of his splendid catalogue Systems, published by the gallery Eric Devlin in 2000, Richard Deschenes dreamed of creating a book of drawings his way. That dream is realized with Espece, a transposition of the artist's repertory of obsessions and manias into book form. The book is presented as a strange catalogue in eight parts, each beginning with the name of the drawings, which then follow. It is an almost static universe, haunted by recurring forms: enormous ectoplasms, millipedes, and simian figures. Monkeys, gorillas, and other primates predominate.
